VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:

  • People who generally make $64,000 or less
  • Persons with disabilities; and
  • Limited English-speaking taxpayers

Current year and prior year tax return preparation is available at all sites (except Chosen City Church and West Blvd. which will only accommodate current year tax returns.)

Where do I go to get my taxes done?

Walk-ins are offered at the Community Link offices through April 15, 2024. First come, first serve. We are open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:30pm - 8pm.We are located at 601 E. 5th Street, Suite 500, in Charlotte.

Most partner sites require an appointment:

  • Allegra Westbrooks Regional Libraryappointments required, walk-ins available Saturdays from 10am - 3pm
  • Common Heart - appointments required
  • Community Link - no appointment required. Starting Feb. 1, we are open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:30pm - 8pm
  • Chosen City Church - appointments required
  • Goodwill (5301 Wilkinson Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28202) appointment required available Monday and Wednesday from 5:30pm – 8pm
  • Goodwill (921 N. Wendover Rd Charlotte, NC 28211) is open on Saturdays from 10am – 3pm, appointment required
  • Levine Senior Center (1050 DeVore Lane Matthews, NC 28105) will be an appointment only intake site. Please call 704-846-4564 for an appointment. This site will be open Mondays 10am to 2pm from Feb. 5, 2024 through April 10, 2024 (Site is closed on Feb. 19, 2024)
  • Sugar Creek Library - appointments required, walk-ins on Saturday from 10am - 3pm
  • West Boulevard Library (2157 West Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28208) is offering walk-ins through April 13, 2024. First come, first serve. West Blvd. Library is open on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Walk-In days do not require an appointment and the site works on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What do I need to get my taxes done?

All taxpayers should bring:

  1. Photo ID for taxpayer(s) - driver's license, State ID card or passport
  2. Social Security Card (or Form SSA-1099 – social security statement) for taxpayer(s) and dependents
  3. Last years’ tax return
  4. Voided blank check (or access to online banking information) for direct deposit of any tax refund
  5. We are unable to prepare the tax return without items 1 and 2

Please bring any applicable 2023 tax documents:

  • Income documents – W-2, SSA-1099 (social security statement), 1099-R, 1099-G,1099-NEC, 1099-Misc, 1099-K, 1099-C, etc.
  • 1098-T for your college student
  • 1095-A (Marketplace medical insurance)
  • Statement from child care provider, including provider’s SSN or EIN
  • Any other tax document that you believe is important to file your tax return

If you anticipate itemizing your deductions, then please bring:

  • Medical expense documentation
  • Form 1098 (mortgage interest)
  • State and local tax, including property tax, documentation, and
  • Charitable giving documentation- goods and case

If you are self-employed, please bring all income and expenses records, and details of miles driven for business. For Uber/Lyft/DoorDash, etc. drivers, please bring your statement of account from the company.

Please note:  Some situations are outside the program parameters, which will preclude us from preparing your return, including:

  • Self-employed tax-payers: if your business had any employees (a spouse is not an employee), a net loss, expenses exceeding $35,000, depreciation, a home office, inventory or you are eligible for the Premium Tax Credit (related to Marketplace Insurance)
  • Rental income or sale of investment property.
  • If you moved from another state to North Carolina or South Carolina during 2023, we may not be able to complete the other state’s tax return.
  • If you sold, exchanged or otherwise disposed of a digital asset (e.g. bitcoin), we are unable to prepare the return.
  • If you are eligible for Electric Vehicle or Solar Tax Credits, we are unable to prepare your return
  • If you are in bankruptcy, we are unable to prepare the return.

What is the Taxathon?
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Days

These are days that Community Link and its network of volunteers will congregate at one site with the goal of completing as many tax returns as possible.  No appointments are required. We will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the sites indicated below. (Our Common Heart site will operate as normal; any other site will be closed).

On February 17, EITC Days will occur at Community Link headquarters, located at 601 E. 5th St. Charlotte, NC 28202. 

On March 16, EITC Days will occur atour Goodwill site located at 5301 Wilkinson Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28208. 

On April 6, EITC Days will occur at Community Link headquarters, located at 601 E. 5th St. Charlotte, NC 28202.
