"I came to Concord when my daughters were 3 and 4 years old so we could stay with a friend… I was homeless. Literally homeless. I was suffering from severe depression and had dealt with eviction so I sought help and got connected with Community Link.

“My Community Link counselor helped me find a house for me and my girls in Concord. We found a place on the bus line and that’s when Jill became my housing manager. She helped me get on my feet. After a year, I got adjusted on my meds and the place where I lived was pretty decent- I was in that house for eight years. I got myself together because of this really great program.. in those eight years, I grew.

“If it wasn’t for Community Link giving somebody like me a chance.. I don’t know where I would be. I’ve been able to find a really good home church and build a lot of really good friendships with the women at my church. I even went back to school, I have a job now and a little car. I went to Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and got my associates degree as a 45-year-old. I feel like I’m bettering myself every year.

“Having somewhere to lay your head is probably the biggest thing that anyone can worry about. Housing is the biggest issue especially for single women with children. Now, my eldest daughter is about to graduate high school and my youngest will graduate next year. They were able to have stability by staying in the same house and the same schools.

“I’m extremely appreciative of Community Link. It wasn’t all peaches and cream in the beginning… I think now I’m one of those success stories because I definitely came a long way.”
